Kinja'd!!!

Looks like the Cybertruck discussion has just about been beaten to death, but I’ve been sick, so now I’m gonna weigh in.

I appreciate that they did something different, but I don’t like the way that they did it. I’m just not a fan of the styling.I think a little more traditional looking cab would make this a much more appealing truck.

Quick hitter thoughts:

Needs at least a portion of flat roof.

Rear head room looks very low.

Rear visibility looks atrocious, which is already bad enough in long trucks with high bed sides.

Something about that huge flat front glass screams “this thing is going to have so many problems”, idk what they would even be, glare? Chips? hard to clear in the winter?

Where are the wipers?

Where’s the frunk?

Bedsides make the bed nearly impossible to use for small items.

Built in ramp is a neat idea, looks weak though.

Tailgate needs a flat open position. (maybe I just haven’t seen it)

That better be one hell of a tailgate hinge.

Dent resistant body panels are nice, but IMO that just means it’s heavier and there’s still plenty of ding prone surfaces, especially with all the sharp edges.

I have no problems calling a properly designed uni-body as a “real truck”, however I still prefer a BOF design for a general utility vehicle.

This thing is going to look nothing like this once it hits production IMO.

Also, try reaching in the side of the bed to get something.

“This thing is going to look nothing like this once it hits production IMO.”

I bet the basic design elements will remain.

But they’re gonna have to add outside mirrors and probably add some proper bumpers. Have a look at how the Model 3 differed between the pre-production model compared to the production one:

https://electrek.co/2017/07/10/tesla-model-3-comparison-pre-alpha-prototype-new-production-unit/

Or look at the prototype Model S:

Compared to what actually went on sale:

Kinja'd!!!

So I predict that there absolutely will be a bunch of design tweaks... but Tesla/Musk are definitely crazy enough to keep the basic look the same and put it into production with that basic look.

Try reaching into the side of the bed on any other full sized truck.  They’re annoyingly high these days.

Very true, but this one will be even worse.

Something about that huge flat front glass screams “this thing is going to have so many problems”, idk what they would even be, glare? Chips? hard to clear in the winter?

I think companies don’t do this because glass is heavy, expensive and fragile, plug it makes it hard to cover with normal wipers.

Where’s the frunk?

In the front? One of the slides showed the bed, a frunk, and two little cubbies that I think were in the bedsides.

Tailgate needs a flat open position. (maybe I just haven’t seen it)

They’ve shown it sticking flat out as opposed to ramped down.

The longer I look at it, the more I agree, looks like it will need some mirrors, maybe better bumpers, and windshield wipers, but the overall shape will probably be pretty close. I would love to see that roof line change a little though.

High is one thing, but with those bed sails the only way to access something in the front of the bed will be to climb in from the back. I can see the aero benefits of having them, but they take away a lot of the utility of the bed.

I assumed the frunk was there, just haven’t seen the pictures of it yet.

Same assumption for the tailgate, haven’t found pictures of it yet.

I had actually missed that it had a Ridgeline-style trunk under the bed. Looks like the tailgate is probably straight there as well.

Thanks for the pic! I hadn’t seen that either, I also didn’t notice the storage inside the bed sails earlier. I still don’t like the styling, but I’m coming around to the rest of the truck.

I’m 6'2", and I can’t reach the bed floor in my Titan by reaching over the side.  Those sail panels will make it worse, but it’s already pretty bad.

That’s one of the things I love about my ‘06 Sierra 2wd.  It’s the perfect height to actually be used.

I already have to climb in the back of my Titan if there’s something towards front of the bed, and I’m 6'2" tall.

Plus the fact that the bed of the average crew cab is usually pretty empty, and I dont think they’re sacrificing that much. It probably won’t be popular with construction companies, but the average suburban weekend warr ior will probably find it useful enough .

However, the tie down hooks in the front corners will be very annoying to use.

Sounds like you got in before the “Trucks need to be big!” fad.

The Titan was pretty early to that party. I often think I’d like it better if it was 2-4 inches lower, but I’m not wanting to give up the suspension travel.

Does this even meet the guidelines for front end pedestrian collisions? Looks like it will chop people in half.

Bed sides have certainly gotten much higher and harder to use, but a t 6' I usually don’t have too much trouble reaching most things in the front of the box unless it’s an HD truck. Sometimes I gotta flop my chest on the bed rail but I can usually grab what I’m after. These bed sails will make that all but impossible, tie down points included.

I would imagine that it does considering they are showing it off as a near production ready vehicle, I’d think that Tesla has done their homework on that, but I honestly have no idea.

To be fair, it is all (amateurish) renders so far, and we are all too familiar with the delta between concept and reality.

No side mirrors either.

This makes me mad because I lost $25,000+ in my stock game due to people thinking this truck is bad.

My soft bed cover already makes that option impossible (or at least extremely uncomfortable) thanks to a raised rail on the sides of the bed.

Most of the time, I’m happy to carry anything small that could roll to the front of the bed inside the cab, where I won’t have to crawl in the back to get it.

But the Cybertruck is not the first one to have this problem, the 1st gen Ridgeline and the Avalanche both had poor access from the sides.

That is truly unfortunate, but I understand the skepticism. Pickups have been, and always will be a utility tool and have remained the same basic shape for many reasons. Improvements can, and should, be made, but the pickup is not really something that needs to be revolutionized IMO. I think what Tesla did here (apart from living out Elon’ s Blade Runner fantasies ) was focus too hard on re-inventing the pickup and in the process lost a few of the major things that make pickups useful the the first place. The longer I look at the Cybertruck, the more I like what they did, but there are still several problems with this design when it comes to utility and usability, mostly due to the slopped roof, and the bed sails.

This is an actual vehicle that was shown by Tesla, I’m sure a few little things will change come production time, but it appears that the overall design is pretty set.
